We begin with the things you need to avoid.

The DON’TS

  • Don’t file your nails forwards and backwards as this is likely to cause splits on your nails which will become worse if water gets in after washing your hands. It makes all the difference if you use a one way stroking action and file gently with patience.
  • Don’t file the corners of your nails because this will weaken them and make them susceptible to breaking. Filing them straight across will produce a nice oval shape as pointed nails tend to break easily.
  • Don’t file your nails while they are wet, simple ensure they dry up before you begin working on them.
  • Don’t use varnish remover and then reapply nail polish more than once in a week. You are better off selecting a vanish remover that has a moisturizer to avoid your nails drying out.
  • Don’t use your nails to scratch hard surfaces, remove staples, picking objects or make a digging tool. Getting the proper tool for your work will only take you a little while and you will keep your nails stronger and better.
  • Don’t manicure your cuticles because this can damage them and make them thicken and most likely overgrow.
  • Don’t overuse any kind of nail polish remover as using a small amount is the best for you’re the health of your nails. You don’t want to have too much of it on the cuticle and the skin around it.
  • Don’t ever cut cuticles or use any metallic or sharp objects to push them back. Just take your time and a few dollars to purchase the proper tool for the job. An orange stick will always do for you a wonderful job   without damaging anything. You can use a cuticle remover first then the rest of the job will be easier.

Nail Care Tips:

The DO’S

  • Do drink plenty of water each and every day. Water is good for your general health and a body that is well hydrated will also contributes much to the good health of your nails. Sometimes when your nails are cracked it may be an indicator that you are dehydrated and need to do something about your fluid intake.
  • Do apply nail vanish remover before you apply nail polish. This helps to remove any grease on the surface of your nail and gives some extra life to the nail polish you are applying. This is a must do whether there is any old polish being removed or not because it makes a difference at the end of the day.
  • Do take some vitamin supplements as a matter of course, this of course unless the doctor advices you otherwise due to any health conditions and considerations. Especially paramount are Vitamins A, C, E and B 12. You may also need to take some supplements that contain calcium, zinc, iron, protein, and folic acid as they will help avoid white marks appearing on the nails and prevent them from becoming brittle. Alternatively you discover the kind of diet that will give you these vitamins and minerals in their natural forms.
  • Do a high quality buffer at least once a week but no more than twice a week. Just make sure you don’t buff too hard and not for too long so that you do not damage your nails. You can simply do a gentle brief buff before applying nail polish as this prevents the polish from peeling off because of some rough or uneven surface on the nail.
  • Do use a rather soft nail file rather than an emery board. Emery boards can sometimes be too rough on your fingernails and will easily cause damage unless used with extreme caution. There some soft cushion files that you can use and wash them regularly after some repeated use. Metal nail files have never been the friends of your nails and they are not about to be.
  • Do wear protective gloves whenever you do any chore that requires your hands to be submerged in water or be in contact with chemicals. It is preferable to use gloves that have some cotton lining so that your hands can remain dry inside. You obviously know that fungus love to thrive in a moist environment.
  • Do give a lot of attention to cuticles remembering to regularly moisturize them using a cream often to avoid cuticles from drying out. When cuticles become overgrown and un-groomed they affect the growth of your nails adversely.
  • Do wear a sunscreen on your hands and cuticles during the day to prevent damage by the dangerous UV rays from the sun. This can easily hurt your nails but remember to reapply your sunscreen every time you wash your hands. It is the little things that make the difference.
  • Do moisturize the cuticle area as this prevents cracking and peeling which hurt the matrix.
  • Do make sure that your manicurist sterilizes all the equipment they use. We cannot overemphasize the importance of this. Even as you try to be the best you can in grooming you cannot afford to risk your health and life in the process.

So there you are your nails say everything about your degree of carefulness to detail in personal grooming. Whether you are doing it at home or you go to the salon remember the list of do’s and don’ts and you will like the experience of lovely nails.
