1. Not washing enough
There are many people who live with the false notion that water is the greatest enemy of their black hair and they believe keeping it unwashed is what is going to make it grow faster. There is no ounce of truth in this fallacy. You need to wash your hair at least once or twice a week as a major part of keeping it sound and healthy. What would you say about a lady who has not washed her hair for such a long time that there is fear some lice could actually have erected permanent homes in her head? Keeping your hair clean is one of the best ways to keep it growing.
2. Going for bargain products
Did you actually know that cheap is expensive in so many ways at the end of the day? This does not mean that we spend our whole month’s paycheck on the hair products that belong to some class of people out of our reach. You can stay away from those cheap products that don’t do you any real good at all. Some of the products that purport to be cheap are of such a low standard that you end up using so many of them to get some simple results. They therefore end up being more expensive after all. Invest in a good quality product that will give you the results you are looking for.
3. Petrolatum and sulfates
Some products we use for our hair can only be compared with industrial detergents and engine grease. Most of the products on our shelves actually have lousy ingredients and we become duped because we never take our time to check out the labels before we buy and hop away. Just look for the words petrolatum and sulfate and if they surface then you are safer leaving the store without them. The effects these products have on your hair and scalp is so terrible words cannot describe them.
4. An excessive use of direct heat styling tools
Many women I know desire to have some long hair but they do themselves a great disfavor by burning their hair too much. An occasional touch up once in a while will do but when you begin to rely on that for ever, then you are setting yourself up for trouble. The direct heat that we apply on our heads is actually the number one reason most of us have such poor quality hair in the first place. So be kind to your hair and avoid that like the plague.
5. Ignoring conditioners every time you wash
Anytime you wash your hair you need to follow up the shampoo with a nice moisturizing conditioner or else you are committing one big blunder with your hair. You need to reminded that you hair needs moisture so much in order to remain healthy. Lack of moisture makes your hair susceptible to snapping every time it is under some little strain or pressure and the solution is some nice conditions as often as you wash. Conditioner is the thing you must not ignore.
6. Avoiding protein conditioners
That your hair needs protein goes without saying. You can as well eat a diet that is full of protein which is a good source of it but then your hair will need much more than you are getting from that source. A really good treatment of your hair is able to give it a 180 degree turnabout when you simply add some deep moisturizing treatment every once in a while.
7. Tight braids and buns
Wearing hair braids that are too tight is one of the greatest undoing of black women. Whoever told them that this is the way to grow their hair? This weakens your hair and actually does a lot of damage to your scalp and the roots of your hair. Simply keep off it and your hair will surely thank you for it.
8. Over doing hair with relaxers
It must be extremely tempting to leave your relaxer on your head for as long as you can but then it does more harm than good. Simply do not succumb to this temptation even when you feel that you are doing your difficult hair a great favor. You can get that straight look you want by employing a good roller set or a press. Good hair health simply demands that you don’t relax your hair more than 75% of the maximum.
9. Always sticking to the weave
Some ladies are too fond of that weave that we add now and again. The truth of the matter is that most of them are not done properly and that in itself is courting disaster as it can destroy your good hair. Your scalp needs a break once in a while and do not deny it. If you have the time and the money it costs then you are better off going for a sew in.
10. Believing we have less than perfect hair
It is pitiful that most black women will blunder and fall here most of the time. No one needs to tell you that you have bad hair, and why on earth do you ever believe them in the first place. All that is usually missing is the correct combination of products and care and you can simply get the hair of your dreams. It does not matter how bad it looks right now. There is so much you can do and you will like the results.
