Eczema is a skin condition that can easily affect anyone of us at any time. And because it is not a contagious disease, there is still a lot of grey area regarding what exactly causes it to affect one person or the other. What is eczema?

Eczema is basically chronic skin condition that is characterized by signs such as itching, rashes which may be red, scaly, dry or leathery. Eczema may occur for the first time in infants with rashes that occur in the cheeks, elbows or knees. It may as well persist into adulthood especially if the person becomes exposed to allergens, chemical irritants or exposure to a large amount of stress. When it occurs in adults it will most likely occur on the inner elbow or behind the knee. The other observation that has been made is that people with eczema will frequently have family members with asthma, hay fever or eczema.

There are some natural remedies that are known to be effective in the management of eczema and below are some of them.

Probiotics

Probiotics or good bacteria are live microbial organisms that are naturally found in the digestive tract. They are suspected to suppress the development of potential harmful bacteria and they influence the immune system’s functions and strengthen the digestive tract’s protective barrier. Research seems to indicate that babies who have a a high risk of allergic disorders such as eczema have varying types and numbers of bacteria in their digestive tact than other babies, and that probiotics supplements taken by pregnant women and children are likely to reduce the incidence of eczema in children.

The use of probiotics to help prevent eczema as well as use of probiotics to treat eczema has also been explores with a degree of success. Probiotics have been found to alleviate symptoms of eczema only in infants and children who are sensitized to food allergens.   Consult a qualified health professional before using probiotics. Children with immune deficiencies should not take probiotics unless under a practitioner’s supervision.

Topical Herbal Creams and Gels

There are numerous gels and creams made from herbal extracts of chamomile, licorice, and witch hazel which have been explored and found to reduce symptoms such as those associated with eczema.

Moisturizing

The greatest favor you can do your skin is to keep it moisturized. This way you will keep your skin free from itching that causes most of the flare-ups. Moisturizing your skin first thing in the morning and the last thing before you go to bed will help keep your skin moist.

Emollient

Emollient happens to be one of the best natural treatments for eczema. It comes in many forms and may include a cream, lotion, or oil. If you search well enough you should be able to find one that you enjoy the feel and are comfortable with. Some people put in the refrigerator during summer so that they give themselves a cool treat when the need arises.

Oatmeal bath

An oatmeal bath can be used as an excellent natural treatment for eczema that also helps to relax you. All you simply need to do is to add some two or three cups of oatmeal to your lukewarm water and then simply slide in. If there is so much itching then you will want to add more oats in the bath. Then you will need to moisturize yourself after your bath and use the moisturizer on your damp skin for keeping all the moisture in your skin.

Another way of controlling itching is using a recipe for natural treatment that made by mixing one teaspoonful of comfrey root, one teaspoonful of slippery elm bark, one teaspoonful of white bark, and two cups of water together in a bowl. Bring the mixture to boil for about thirty five minutes and then let it cool. The mixture can then be used a skin wash to clean the affected area and is known to drastically reduce the itching sensation.

Blueberry leaves are an ingredient that you can look for in lotion form. They are said to be helpful at relieving eczema related inflammation and helping the itch. Another excellent natural treatment for eczema is Vitamin E. You can soothe the affected area with Vitamin E cream or consume Vitamin E supplements.
